What is really sad here is that churches have always been a political force. The tax-exempt status in today’s modern America is simply a tactic used to diminish the power of churches in politics. Understand… there are Progressive and Conservative churches; their voices should be heard as much as any other organization. What about the power secular corporations have with their high-paid lobbyists? There doesn’t seem to be much regulation there.
Being a religious Progressive or Conservative should not exempt you from getting involved in politics… as an individual or as an organization. And, since there is no way for anyone to effectively “police” (for lack of a better term) any particular church’s sermons for political speech… you can be sure that it is happening everywhere anyway. The only time we hear about it is when someone who considers said church’s opinion as damaging to their agenda uses these tax-exempt laws as a way to attack the church and silence their speech.
Think about it.
